CueRemote is a remote for checking and operating a QLab 5 workspace from a phone or tablet. QLab, on the Mac, keeps the programming, the files and the playback. CueRemote does not create, edit or delete cues and does not play audio on its own.

1. Before connecting

  • Open a rehearsal workspace in QLab 5 and enable its OSC access.
  • Create or use a passcode with View and Control permissions. CueRemote does not need Edit permission.
  • Put the device and the Mac on a trusted network that allows local communication. Avoid guest networks that isolate devices.
  • Keep direct access to the Mac and an alternative operating procedure during rehearsals and the show.

2. Discovery and connection

  1. Open CueRemote and allow local network access when the system asks.
  2. Select the discovered Mac. If it does not appear, enter the address and port configured in QLab manually.
  3. Select the workspace, enter its authorised passcode and connect.
  4. Check the connection indicator, the visible list and the playhead. If any of them does not match QLab, do not press GO.

Commands and the passcode travel over OSC/TCP without TLS. Protected storage of a credential does not encrypt the network. Use CueRemote only on a trusted control network and never expose QLab’s port to the Internet.

3. Checking the workspace

Select the list you want to check and confirm on the Mac that it belongs to the right workspace. The interface shows information received from QLab; if the connection is lost, the last visible content may be out of date.

Before any transport command, always check:

  • Mac and workspace connected;
  • selected list;
  • cue or playhead ready;
  • current playback state in QLab.

4. Operating the transport

  • GO: runs the prepared action in QLab. Do not repeat it blindly if the response is slow.
  • STOP: asks QLab to stop. Check the real result on the Mac and in the sound system.
  • Pause/Resume: acts on playback according to the state reported by QLab.
  • Lists and playhead: choosing a list in CueRemote also switches QLab to that list, and GO fires the list you see. If QLab is on another list, CueRemote warns you and switches it back before firing. Still confirm the prepared cue in QLab.
  • Carts: a cart has no playhead and GO does nothing there. Tap a cue to fire it. The padlock blocks these taps.

Disconnecting CueRemote is not the same as STOP. The show may carry on on the Mac. If in doubt, check QLab again before sending another command.

5. Network recovery

  1. Stop pressing and check QLab’s state directly.
  2. Review Wi-Fi/Ethernet, address, port, local network permission and firewall rules. Do not disable security indiscriminately.
  3. Reconnect and confirm workspace, list and playhead again.
  4. Rehearse this procedure before using the remote during a show.

6. Credentials and deletion

On iOS, passcodes are stored in the local Keychain, without sync and limited to the device. On Android they are encrypted with Android Keystore and excluded from backups and transfers. See the CueRemote privacy policy for the scope and deletion procedures on each platform.

Do not send passcodes, passwords, signing keys or private production data when asking for help.

7. Recommended rehearsal checklist

  • GO, STOP and pause/resume with a test workspace.
  • Switching lists and checking the playhead.
  • Firing a cue from a cart.
  • Network loss and recovery without repeating commands.
  • Closing CueRemote while QLab keeps running.
  • Restarting the device and checking saved connections.
